What is a Tooltip?

A tooltip is a short message that describes what a button or other graphical user interface element does that appears only when you hover the mouse cursor over said element for a few moments. For example, there are many cases of applications that use buttons without text labels, that have only an icon. In these cases, hovering the mouse cursor over the button will reveal a short text label that describes what's the name of the tool or what it does, and, sometimes, other information such as what is its keyboard shortcut.

The term may also used to refer to large descriptive boxes that appear when you hover something.

Observation: if an application has an unlabeled button without tooltip, that's an application of bad quality.
