How to Remove the Start and End of a Video using DaVinci Resolve

Share
In this tutorial, we'll learn how to remove the start and end of a video using DaVinci Resolve version 18.6. We can use this, for example, to remove the starting and ending parts where we make the camera start and finish recording, or to remove the window of a screen-recording application like OBS Studio. We'll start by learning the basic method anyone can do, and then we'll learn a faster editing method.

Step 1: open DaVinci Resolve, create a new project, and import the video file that you want to remove the beginning and/or ending from.

Step 2: click on the "Cut" tab at the bottom of the window and drag the video from the media pool into the timeline. This will create a clip of our video file in the timeline.

In order to remove unwanted parts of our video, we need to split the video clip into two parts, into two sub-clips: the first clip will be the part that we want to keep in the video, while the second clip is the part we want to remove from the video.

If we want to remove both the start AND the end of the video, we'll need to do this process two times, since there are two parts we want to get rid of: the start and the end. Let's learn how to remove the beginning of the video first.

Step 3: move the timeline cursor (a red vertical line across the timeline) to the beginning of the part that you want to keep. You can do this by clicking on the upper timeline in the Cut tab, or by dragging the lower timeline, which is more precise, or by pressing the Left Arrow and Right Arrow keys. On the top-right corner of the window, there should be a preview area that shows what that current frame of the video looks like.

For example, if you want to remove the OBS Studio's window from a video recording of your screen, you should move the timeline forward until OBS Studio's window is hidden, i.e. until after you minimized the unwanted window. A tip: for better recording quality, it's a good idea to move forward a little more until your mouse cursor is stopped still, so the video doesn't start or end with the cursor moving toward the screen recording software.

When the cursor is at the beginning of the part you want to keep, everything before the cursor will be the part you want to get rid off.

Step 4: click on the menu Timeline -> Razor on the menubar (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+B) to split the video clip in two. It may be hard to notice that it has been split. On the timeline, the selected clip should have a red outline. When the selected clip is split into two clips, only the clip before the cursor becomes selected, so the red selected outline should change when you split a clip.

Common problems: if you have multiple clips, you need to select the correct clip before splitting it.

Step 5: select the clip that you want to remove and click on Edit -> Delete Selected on the menubar (keyboard shortcut: Backspace). You can also press the Delete key to do this.

Step 6: repeat the process above to remove the unwanted part at the end of the video.

Step 7: after you deleted the clip before the beginning of the video, there may be a blank space on the timeline at the start. Click on the remaining clip and drag it to the left until it's aligned with the start of the timeline.

Step 8: move the timeline cursor to the start of the timeline and, on the top-right preview area, click on the play button to make sure your edits are correct. If you have cut too much or too little, you can make adjustments dragging the sides of the clip on the timeline.

Step 9: click on the Deliver tab at the bottom of the screen and export your video.
