The recommended method to add text in Krita is to use Inkscape to create the text, and then send that text to Krita either by copy-pasting it (easy and quick, but won't work by default), or by setting up your Inkscape and Krita files in such way that you can export a PNG from Inkscape and have Krita automatically display the changes (recommended for projects with lots of text, such as comics).

You can also use Krita's built-in text tool, but I don't really recommend it. If you're wondering why the text tool isn't working when you click on the canvas, it's because you need to drag a rectangle for it to work, by the way.
Some features that Inkscape has which Krita's built-in text tool doesn't have include the ability of making text go along a path, so you can make text curved, for example, and the ability to write text vertically (e.g. for Chinese and Japanese languages).
