To Overwrite

What is "To Overwrite" in the Computer?

Overwriting means to replace data that existed somewhere in the computer with other data. When this is done, the original data is lost, that is, it's as if the old data was deleted to make space for the new data which would be placed exactly in the same space as the old data.

For example, in a file system, every file has an unique filepath: you can't have two files in a same folder with the same filename. If you tried to save a file called flower in a folder where there already exists a file called flower, the application that you're using would warn that the flower file will be overwritten. If you decide to overwrite the file, after that you won't have one old flower file and one new flower file, you'll have only one flower file with the new data, and the old flower file would be lost.
