Right-Click Main Menu

What is a "Right-Click Main Menu"?

A right-click main menu is a main menu of an application that appears when you right click somewhere on its main window. Traditionally, the main menu of an application would be displayed in its menubar, and the application would have other "bars" like the toolbar and statusbar in its main window using precious vertical space. Some image-related applications are intended to be more immersive and less cluttered, so they don't want to have all these bars. However, without bars, there is no main menu because there is no menubar. Some such applications have a different paradigm: instead of placing the main menu in the menubar, they make the context menu of the whole window the main menu of the application (the context menu is the menu that appears when you right click on something). This strategy only works in these applications because the entire window is composed of only one single graphical user interface element. That's because if there were two elements, their context menus would likely be different.

Examples of applications that implement right-click main menus includes:

  1. JPEGView (a Windows image viewer).
  2. qView [interversehq.com/qview/] (a cross-platform image viewer).
  3. BeeRef (a cross-platform art reference tool).

These applications also get rid of the scrollbars, making using of click-and-drag to move the viewport instead.
