To block a blog on Tumblr, there are two methods: by clicking on the blog's post, or by adding their name directly to your block list. Let's start with the first one.
Blocking a Blog from Appearing on Your Dash
1: on the blog's post, click on the three dots on the top-right corner of the post. A dropdown menu will appear.
2: click on "Block @blog-name," which is the last item of the menu. A message will appear asking you whether you really want to block them or not.
3: click "Block." The blog will be blocked.
When a blog is blocked this manner:
- They won't be able to follow your primary blog.
- Send your primary blog messages.
- Find your primary blog in search results.
- Interact with any of your primary blog's posts.
- You won't be able to see their posts.
- A message saying you have them blocked appears if you try to visit their blog.
- Their posts won't appear in your search results, although posts that mention them by name will appear.
Blocking a Blog from Interacting with Your Secondary Blogs
Because any user may have any number of blogs, a blog may be blocked by one blog but not by another of the same user.
When you block a blog with the method above, it gets blocked by your primary blog, so they can't interact with your primary blog, and you can't view or interact with them either.
You can also block a blog from interacting with a secondary blog without blocking them from interacting with your primary blog or your other secondary blogs. To do this, follow the following steps:
1: on the sidebar, click on "Account" to reveal your blogs.
2: select which blog you want to block another user's blog from. Your dash should change to display the selected blog's posts.
3: on the right sidebar, select "Blog settings."
4: at the bottom of the blog settings page, you should see a field labelled "Blocked Tumblrs." Click on the pencil icon at the right to edit it.
5: type the "URL" of the Tumblr blog that you want to block, e.g. if you want to block fakevirtualcuriosities
, type that, then click "Block."
Now they won't be able to interact with your secondary blog anymore.
Observations
I'm not sure what happens if a blog blocks your secondary blog. Would you still be able to see that user's posts? If not, one could just keep creating secondary blogs to interact with a blog after they've been banned. I assume you can contact Tumblr's staff if you ever encounter this sort of abuse.
