How to Subscribe to an RSS Feed in Vivaldi

Share
In this tutorial, we'll learn how to subscribe to an RSS feed in Vivaldi (version 6.9). Vivaldi is a web browser, but it comes with built-in RSS functionality that makes it an RSS client.

There are two ways to subscribe to an RSS feed in Vivaldi: by visiting the associated webpage first, or by giving Vivaldi the actual URL of the RSS feed. Let's start with the first way.

1: access a webpage that has an RSS feed associated with it. Often, this will be the homepage of a website that publishes articles. These could be news articles associated with a product or project, or simply posts in a blog.

When you visit a webpage that has an RSS feed associated with it, Vivaldi will display an RSS logo icon on its address bar.

A web browser's tab titled "virtual curiosities." Under it, the address bar showing a slashed shield icon, a padlock icon, the address www.virtualcuriosities.com, a RSS icon, a bookmark icon, and a downward arrow.

2: click on the RSS logo icon. Depending on the webpage, two things could happen.

If the webpage has multiple RSS feeds associated to it, a dropdown menu will appear listing all of its RSS feeds. This is the case with websites made with WordPress, which, by default, will have an RSS feed for the recent articles and a separate RSS feed for the recent comments published on the website. In this case, you'll want to click on the "Subscribe" option of the feed that interests you. If they all interest you, repeat the process with all the feeds.

After you click the "Subscribe" option, a dialog window will appear.

If the webpage only has one RSS feed associated to it, clicking on the RSS logo icon has the same effect as clicking on the "Subscribe" option: the same dialog window will appear.

A dialog window titled "Add Feed." It has three fields: Feed Title (value: Virtual Curiosities » Feed), Address (value: https://ww.virtualcuriosi...) Refresh Interval (value: Daily). Under the fields it says: Last updated: Wed, 23 Oct 2024 20:29:53 +0000. Latest feed items (preview) How to Decide the Update Frequency of an RSS Feed; How to Add an RSS Feed to Thunderbird; How to Find the RSS Feed URL of a Website. Three buttons: Preview, Add Feed and Cancel.

3: change the Refresh Interval to a sensible value such as "Daily" (the default is once every two hours).

Optional: if you aren't sure if this is the feed you want to subscribe to, you may want to click on the "Preview" button to see what the last articles in the RSS feed look like. Sometimes you'll see surprising results, e.g. a feed you find in one category page being actually a feed for the entire website.

4: click "Add Feed." The feed will be added to your Vivaldi profile.

Viewing Your Feeds

To view your RSS feeds and the subscribed articles, follow the following steps:

1: click on the Vivaldi's button at the top-left of the window to display Vivaldi's main menu.

2: click on View -> Panels -> Feeds Panel.

Alternatively: you can click on the RSS logo icon on Vivaldi's sidebar if you have the sidebar visible.

3: click on "Feeds," the root item on the feeds pane, to view the combined articles from all your subscriptions.

Adding RSS Feeds by URL

To add an RSS feed by URL in Vivaldi, open the feeds panel (as explained above) and click on the button with a plus (+) icon that appears above the feeds list. The "Add Feed" dialog will appear but this time without anything entered in it. Write the feed's URL into the Address field and click the Add Feed button to add it.
