Installing WordPress Plugins to Disable Things

Share

Recently, I wrote a ":(" that WordPress turned into an emoji. I don't know why WordPress has this feature, but I hate it. I hate emojis. I don't like them. I don't want them. I think the world would be a better place without emojis. So, naturally, I wanted to disable this emoji "feature" for I consider it a bug on our society.

Alas, there's no "disable emojis" setting. You would this is something important enough that here would be a checkbox to disable it. In fact, that it should be opt-in. After all, why would I want to load a javascript to load my text into emojis? There's no indication (or should I say warning) in Gutenberg that ":(" is going to turn into an emoji. So much for a WYSIWYG editor.

But not all is lost. Apparently, if you install a WordPress plugin, the "Disable Emojis (GDPR friendly)" plugin to be exact, you can get rid of the emojis.

That's right, you... install a plugin... and instead of adding functionality, the plugin removes functionality.

Okay. I'm going to be honest I don't like where this is going. But if it gets rid of the emojis... well, that's a small price to pay, I guess?
