How to Open the File Explorer in Windows 11

Share

To open the File Explorer, there are various methods: from the start menu, from the taskbar, or from the command prompt.

From the Start Menu

Open the Start menu and then type "File Explorer" in the search box. The File Explorer icon should appear in the first result, so click on it.

From the Taskbar

Alternatively, you can click on the File Explorer icon that is pinned by default on the taskbar.

From the Command Prompt

It's also possible to start the File Explorer from the command prompt. Its filepath is C:\Windows\explorer.exe, but executables in this system folder can be executed by their filenames alone, so all you need to type is explorer.exe (or even just explorer) to run it from the command line.

By default, the File Explorer shows the Home folder. You can type the filepath of the folder it should open as the second argument of the command in the command prompt. For example:

explorer.exe "C:\Program Files\"

If you type the command above in the command line, the system will open a new File Explorer window displaying the contents of the C:\Program Files\ folder.
