What is a Youtube Short?

A Youtube Short is a Youtube Video that is both short and vertical (short being less than one minute long). It seems to be Youtube's attempt at copying TikTok's short-and-vertical video format.

Youtube Shorts are displayed in a different layout from normal Youtube Videos. This different layout may be missing some features that the normal Youtube layout has. Notably, the URL is different, so computer programs that do things when you paste URLs of Youtube Videos in them may have a problem if you paste a Shorts URL.

How to Upload a Youtube Short?

When an user uploads a video to Youtube, they don't get to decide whether it's a Youtube Short or not. To upload a Youtube Short, you just upload a video that is short and vertical, and Youtube automatically classifies it as a Youtube Short. According to Google:

To upload a Short from a computer:

1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
2. In the top-right corner, click CREATE and then Upload videos.
3. Select a short-video file:
   • Up to 60 seconds.
   • With a square or vertical aspect ratio.

So the only requirements are that a Youtube Short can't be longer than one minute and can't be horizontal.

There doesn't seem to be a way to opt out of turning your videos into Shorts or changing them back to normal, despite them being pretty much just normal Youtube videos.
