What is Mastodon?

Mastodon is kind-of a social media website similar to Twitter. More specifically, Mastodon is the name of a software used to create social media websites. One of these websites is ALSO called Mastodon (mastodon.social), which is rather confusing. Websites created with Mastodon all look the same, or at least most of them do, however they are still completely separate websites. It's like you have one hundred different Twitters. If you created an account in one of them, you wouldn't be able to talk with people from a different Twitter. Or at least normally you wouldn't, because Mastodon is a federated social media, which means one Mastodon website can connect to other Mastodon websites forming a network called the Fediverse, and so posts posted in one website can go to other websites sometimes.
