How to Show File Extensions in Windows 11

Share

To show file extensions in Windows 11, open the File Explorer and click the three dots on the toolbar (to the right of sort, view, and filter). A popup menu will appear. On it, click on Options. This will open the classic Folder Options dialog, which has three tabs: General, View, and Search. Click on the View tab. On it, you'll see a list labelled "Advanced settings" containing several checkboxes. Scroll the list until you find the checkbox for "Hide extensions for known file types;" uncheck it; then click the OK or Apply button at the bottom of the Folder Options dialog.

The process to do this in previous version of Windows, like Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP, is very similar, since the Folder Options dialog hasn't really changed in at least two decades. If you are having trouble opening the Folder Options dialog, try opening the Start menu and typing "Folder options" in the search box. On Windows 11, it's titled "File Explorer Options" but it's exactly the same dialog, all that changed was the title.
