What is a License?
A license is something that grants your permission to do something. In particular, licenses can grant you permission to use copyrighted works. Normally, the copyright owner has the exclusive right to copy and distribute their work, and they can sue you if you start copying things without permission. They can license the work to you so you're legally allowed to copy things.
There are some pre-made licenses that can grant rights to everyone to copy so long as they abide the license terms, such as Creative Commons, GPL, and LGPL.
