What is Windows?
Windows is an operating system created by Microsoft. Most PCs today run Windows.
Do not confuse Microsoft Windows with a "window." In a computer, a "window" is an user interface element that you can minimize, maximize, and move around. Other operating systems, like Linux Mint, also have windows, but they aren't Microsoft Windows.
There are various versions of Windows, some examples include Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Windows 11. And various editions for every version, such as Windows Home Edition and Windows Pro Edition.
Windows comes with various applications installed by default. To name a few notable ones:
- File Explorer - the file manager.
- Microsoft Edge - the web browser, previously called Internet Explorer, or IE.
- Microsoft Paint - a simple image editor.
- Notepad - a simple plain text editor.
