What are KB, MB, GB, and TB?
KB, MB, GB, and TB are abbreviations for the words kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, and terabyte. That is, 8GB would be 8 gigabytes, 1TB would be 1 terabyte, 200KB would be 200 kilobytes, and so on.
With lower case b
In some cases, KB and Kb, MB an Mb, GB and Gb, and TB and Tb have different meanings. There is a rule that the upper case B
means byte, while the lower case b
means bit. 1 byte is 8 bits. So 1 KB (kilobyte) would be eight times larger than 1 Kb (kilobit), since B is larger. This rule is a bit confusing and it's common for it to be ignored completely.
