What is a Client in a Computer?

A client is a computer program that receives data from a server, which is a computer program that sends data to clients. Typically, these terms refer to a client in one computer connecting over the Internet to a server in another computer, e.g. a web browser is a web client that connects to a web server to download the data of a webpage. However, clients and servers can also exist in a same computer, e.g. a language server.

The term client is also used to refer to certain applications that connect to servers of an online service, e.g. the Steam client is an application made by Steam that connects to the Steam servers; the Discord client is made by Discord and connects to Discord servers; the Spotify client is made by Spotify and connects to Spotify servers; and so on.
